What happens to your data
Deleted or anonymised straight away
- Your login. Your email address is released from the account and your password is destroyed. You can’t sign in again, and every signed-in device is signed out.
- Your profile. Name, bio, photo, interests, languages and city are erased. Where your profile used to appear, people see “Deleted user”.
- Your photos. Your profile picture is removed from our storage.
- Your listings. Anything still live or paused is taken down and stops appearing in Explore and the feed.
- Open exchanges. Requests you sent are cancelled and requests you received are declined, so nobody is left waiting on you. Unused claim codes stop working.
- Your connections and settings. Who you follow and who follows you, notification preferences, push registrations and saved request state.
- Unredeemed partner discounts you had claimed but not used yet.
- Usage and analytics records tied to your account.
Your tokens lapse
Every token you still hold — vintage, community and payback — is set to zero when the account is deleted. They are not paid out, transferred or refunded, and they cannot be restored afterwards. If you have tokens you care about, spend them before you delete.
Kept, and why
A few things survive deletion because they are not only about you. None of them can be traced back to you by another user once your profile is gone.
- Your messages. The person you traded with keeps their side of the conversation — it is their record of an exchange they were part of too. Your name in it is replaced by “Deleted user”.
- Completed exchanges. Finished and expired listings and the trades attached to them stay, for the same reason: they anchor the other person’s history.
- Partner discounts you actually redeemed. The business keeps its own record of the transaction.
- Proof that you accepted the Terms — an account identifier, which version, and the date. Kept for 5 years to cover statutory limitation periods under Dutch law.
- Technical logs — at most 90 days, unless a specific security incident requires longer.
Backups
Deletion in the app is immediate. Copies of your data inside our encrypted backups are overwritten in the ordinary course of backup rotation, within 30 days at the latest. Those backups are only ever restored after a catastrophic failure — they are not searched or used to bring accounts back.
Your other rights
Deleting is not the only option. You can also ask for a copy of your data, have something corrected, or object to a particular use — under the GDPR, an informal email to support@thecoup.app is enough. The Privacy Policy sets out the full list and how long we take.
